Why UPI Should Remain Free
UPI has done something surprisingly simple but incredibly important: it has ended the daily “₹5 ka khulla hai?” — “₹10 ka change hai?” jhik-jhik over loose change. 😄
From roadside vendors to supermarkets, people can now pay the exact amount instantly without searching their pockets for coins or asking someone for change.
Keeping UPI free has several benefits:
- No hassle of “khulla” (loose change) — Pay the exact amount every time.
- Encourages digital payments — People are more likely to use UPI when there is no transaction fee.
- Helps small businesses — Small vendors and shopkeepers can accept exact payments without losing part of their already-thin margins.
- Makes small transactions practical — ₹10, ₹20 or ₹50 payments remain convenient.
- Reduces cash dependency — Less need to carry coins and notes.
- Improves transparency — Digital transactions create a clear payment trail.
- Promotes financial inclusion — A simple smartphone-based payment system is accessible to millions.
- Supports India's digital economy — Frictionless payments make everyday commerce easier.
The simple point:
UPI didn't just make payments digital—it made them frictionless.
It ended the everyday “khulla hai?” jhik-jhik between customers and shopkeepers. That convenience should not be lost by introducing charges on ordinary UPI transactions.
UPI should remain FREE for ordinary consumers and small merchants. 🇮🇳
